Hull material is one of the most consequential decisions in a chase boat’s design because it determines how the vessel absorbs shock, manages weight distribution, and holds up under repeated wave impact. In heavy conditions, the wrong material does not just affect comfort—it affects structural integrity, handling predictability, and long-term reliability. The right hull material keeps a chase boat responsive and safe when seas turn demanding.

Most chase boats have limited range between refuelling stops because they are built around speed and immediate responsiveness rather than endurance. Their deep-V or planing hulls burn through fuel quickly at high speeds, and their relatively compact fuel tanks prioritise weight savings over capacity. For a vessel designed to shadow a superyacht and respond quickly, range has historically been treated as a secondary concern.

Speed alone does not make a chase boat suitable for offshore use, because open water demands far more than acceleration. A fast hull that performs well in calm, sheltered conditions can become dangerous in offshore swells, strong winds, and unpredictable sea states. Offshore capability depends on hull geometry, structural integrity, stability at sea, and the ability to maintain control when conditions deteriorate. Speed is one variable. Seaworthiness is the whole equation.

Dutch shipbuilding remains the gold standard for chase boats because of its centuries-long engineering tradition, rigorous quality standards, and uncompromising focus on seaworthiness. Dutch-built vessels are designed to perform in the harshest open-water conditions, not just in calm harbors. The combination of advanced composite materials, naval architecture expertise, and limited-production craftsmanship produces chase boats that outperform mass-produced alternatives in speed, stability, and long-term reliability.

Mass-produced chase boats are a common sight in offshore environments, used to support superyachts, ferry guests, and run errands across open water. But when the sea turns rough and conditions deteriorate, these vessels often reveal a fundamental mismatch between how they were built and what offshore use actually demands. The shortcuts taken during mass production can compromise safety, performance, and longevity in ways that are not always obvious until you are far from shore.

Serious buyers who sail in demanding waters, from the North Sea to the Norwegian fjords, increasingly question Italian and French yacht builders because those manufacturers have historically optimised their vessels for Mediterranean conditions: calmer seas, predictable weather, and shorter passages. When the agenda shifts to rougher climates and year-round sailing, engineering priorities change completely, and many buyers discover that a chase boat built for the Côte d’Azur simply does not perform the same way off the Scottish coast in October.
